big waterfalls    Any size feature is possible. At left is a ten foot wide waterfalls as a main feature of a front yard and at right is a 3 1/2 foot miniature pond hiding the foundation of a shed! Water gardens are personal and should be created to suit your taste and desires.

What a difference...Here is the base blocks* in place and then three days later the planting is almost done. Note:The round fountain in the lower right was created from antique ruins..see close up bottom right.

start water gardening    Rock pile and base blocks* to pond!  What a difference a couple of days can make to a new addition to a home. Stone was built up for the cascade and walkway to hide the high foundation.

potential water garden    This pond solved the problem of a banking that was too steep to mow. The difference is incredible! Not only does it eliminate mowing, but it transforms a plain slope into a lush paradise with moving water and plants.

corner pond    This shows how even a small pond can be very effective and in this case, helps hide the foundation near and entranceway. Base blocks* to pond in one day!
corner pond
boulder pond    This yard was composed mainly of boulders so a pond was an excellent way to soften the landscape. Water trickles off the two overhanging boulders for excellent sound effects.
boulder pond
from the woods    Here's a just completed pond that's an excellent transition from woods to yard.  It looks quite barren now, but once there are creeping plants (such as sedum or phlox) hanging over the back wall, the top area is naturalized with low bush blueberrys and the front area is landscaped, it will look very natural.
woods pond
from the woods    Some locations may seem a difficult spot to fit in a pond, but there's usually a way. This two level pond is atop soiled ledge and had to be squeezed between a patio wall and the property line, but I think it is excellent! Note the dragon spouter in the top pool - very nice.

*Pond Build Tip - When we mention Base Blocks in these pictures, we are refering to a technique we developed to stabilize the pond edges in our sandy New Hampshire soil and to guarantee level pond edges.  We first layout and level cement blocks or patio blocks, depending upon the pond, level them on virgin soil - to avoid settling, and they will define the pond edges. You can see more detail on our Pond Build page, but all the intricacies of the technique are offered on our Pond Place CD along with ALL of our Pond Projects! Order now for only $29.95 and let's get started on YOUR pond!

water garden before    Here's an example of a typical installation (If there is such a thing). Very basic 8' x 12' pond, simple filtration, stream and falls, one end for plants, one deep enough to winter fish and a basic pond and land planting to get the customer started. Water gardens may be simpler or much more complex, but this type of setup is a great way to get a proud 'new- ponderer' started and they can modify from here. What a difference in the landscape!

Needs Work!    This small pond was used to clean up an area beside the driveway. It's a much nicer "welcome home" now! The blue in the water prevents algae growth. (I don't care for it, but some do.)
Small but effective
Big Pond    Big yard, big pond, big stream and 4000 gallon per hour pump. I'd rather have this than a swimming pool! As long as the fish don't mind an occasional visitor.
30' stream
old falls    Here is a waterfalls upgrade where a trickling falls that kept the rocks beneath it green with algae was reassembled (along with a boost in pump power) to create a cleaner looking falls with a better looking flow for the size of the pond.

Blocked sides for support    Catastrophe to beautiful! The sides of this homeowner installed pond caved in during a week of heavy rain. The picture at left shows how we blocked in the sides to stabilize them so the original liner would still fit the hole. The photo at right is the refinished pond. What a difference!
Pond Build Tip: This can happen when a backhoe or excavator digs the hole too close to the finish edges of the pond. The machine disturbs and stresses the soil, the heavy stones are stacked at the edge and a heavy rain turns the stressed and disturbed soil into mud so the stones and edges collapse. There's more disaster avoiding tips and info on our Pond Place CD

pond view from house    We prefer a pond in the backyard so it can be a private sanctuary, but here's two nice ponds in front yards. The pond at left offers a view towards the living room window. From inside the house, the pond at right is hidden by the plantings, but the view is spectacular from the driveway and walk!

rocky pond    Here's two ponds in the same neighborhood that show very contrasting styles. One features the rugged look of stone with minimal pond plantings while the other is softened by the lush plantings.

Hard lines    Before and after pictures show how a small water feature can add interest and remove the starkness from a small courtyard area.

Melanie pond    Here's a small pond that makes a very effective border between lawn and woods. What a difference a between the two photos!

arndl pond    This is another before and after that shows how a small pond can transform an unused corner of a yard. The stream is a bit straighter than I care for, but its size and layout were very restricted by the area.

wetland
This pond is to be built about 18" above grade and the wetland filter will have to be almost 3' above grade to gain heoght for the falls.  You can see the base blocks for the pond in the first photo, the start of the wetland in the second and the last two offer a finished view after the loam for the planting berms has been added.  A wall still has to built along the front edge of the pond for seating.
