pond by Gary

Here's three ponds made by Gary W. He says his hobby has turned into a nice part time business and hopes to be full time very soon. I wish him luck.
watergarden by Tom Tom from Pittsburgh says:"Well I've been bitten.. This year I replaced the inexpensive plastic preform with flexible rubber liner, increasing the size about 2.5 times. Later this year I'm itching to redo my waterfall and make it wider. It's addictive."

Build Tip: An easy way to enlarge without tearing out an existing pond is to take advantage of any slope to make a two pond system with stream or falls between or do the same in a level area by raising the new pond above grade. Our Pond Place CD has many more labor saving tips and techniques!
water garden by BarbaraF Barbara F. sent this pic of her newly installed pond. It was built as a memorial pond to a deceased family member and the carved stone dedicating the pond is at top left.
water garden by JE    J.E. sent this picture of her new pond. It was placed in an existing flower garden next to her front walk as an attractive entranceway and a place to sit and relax.
Joe's Pond    Joe thought he couldn't do it, but we talked him through each stage of installation. Here's the finished fish pond ready for plants and then some Koi. Good work Joe!

Here's pictures of two of Bill's three ponds. He calls them his works in progress and they are a great excuse to spend some leisure time in the yard.
Accents Family    Here's a nice looking pond made by John & Teresa in Ohio who say: "It may be small but it adds a nice accent to the backyard and is a great place to relax on a hot summer evening."

Pond Build Tip: Some of these ponds have stone covered bottoms and this is also recommended by a major kit manufacturer and many TV shows and books, BUT - most experienced installers, pond maintenance people and Koi owners prefer no stones or a few larger ones or just a few scattered pebbles for effect.
We go into this in detail in the Pond Place CD, but there is currently a controversy and here are the highlights. Fish show up much better against the black liner bottom than against stones. Debris washes across a bare-bottomed pond to be filtered rather than being trapped in the stones to rot. It's easier to maintain a pond with a bare liner or one with a couple of stones that can be worked around. There's less chance of damaging a bare liner if you have to get into the pond. The darker, bare bottom looks deeper than the bottom of a pebbled pond and has less tendency to grow the stubborn, long string algae than a stone-bottomed pond.  As  last comment... the picture (below) shows me cleaning 2-1/2 tons of disgustingly dirty, muddy and smelly pebbles and stones from the bottom of a three year old pond after repeated power washings did little to remove the build up of &^%* (let's call it silt) in the stones which provided food to a meadow of string algae that couldn't be controlled without chemical treatments and enzymes. Pebbles or not?

Jesse pond    Jesse's pond is in northeast Pennsylvania. I especially like the use of the old hand pump and 'leaking' bucket as the source of the stream. I wonder if the bucket has some filter material in it to help keep the water clear?
watergarden by PM1
water garden by PM2
P.M. can be very proud of these ponds. There is a Koi pond, goldfish pond, streams pools and more.  I especially like the double water falls and the way all the ponds turn what was a flat, uninteresting grassy area into a lush oasis of moving water, reflections, fish, plants, etc. Well done!
pond by RD
water garden by RD2
R & D's pond is the centerpiece of their backyard and it is indeed beautiful. The second, mid-winter picture, shows how they keep their pond from freezing even in Northern Indiana winters and under all that snow! (A clever idea).
Michael's Pond     Here is a very nice and very natural looking 1800 gallon Koi pond made by Michael in Alabama. He and his wife have been working on it for two years. The Koi must love nibbling at the natural plants and grass growing down into the pond edges.
JER's water garden      This pond is looking very lush considering it is in western Texas where it gets pretty dry. J.E.R. says it is frequented by squirrels, birds and some neighborhood cats that are tempted to try fishing!
Angie's Pond      Angie's husband created this pond for a birthday surprise. It's very effective and only uses a small corner of the backyard.
Dan Cathy pond     Dan and Cathy's Goldfish and Koi pond is almost two years old and it is looking good.
Barb & Chuck's pond     Barb & Chuck's pond has been evolving for 4 years...In fact, this pond has just been enlarged to 7' x 12' and made deep enough for the fish to survive the cold Pennsylvania winters.
K's water garden     Richard and Iris made this pond at their Dover, NH home. It just finished it's initial algae bloom and is looking great! Plans to add large shrubs behind the falls will help to make it look more natural.
Angie's Pond     Angie's attractive pond is three years old...and is doing well except for soil washing into pond from the edges.
Clear Water Tip: This is a common problem if the liner is cut too low or, more often, when the mulch and soil level around the pond slowly builds up over time. If your pond has a history of being well behaved and develops 'brown water' problems, check the edges for this build up and rake back the old mulch before you add new! Our Pond Place CD offers plenty of clear water tips and techniques plus ALL of our Pond Projects!
Amy's Pond     Amy's pond has a deck build right up to the edge for comfortable seating and pond viewing.
Water Quality Tip: Keep in mind when building over the pond with pressure treated or finished lumber... Some treatments and finished can be toxic to pondlife.  This deck is mainly over land so there is no problem.
Sheila Pond     Sheila's pond, in Wisconsin, is her first attempt at pond building and was built as a 'watering hole' for the local birds.
Kirby pond      Jan K. says: "Here is a photo of our pond. Currently home to about forty fish. Built in 1998. Appox. four meters by six meters". What a centerpiece for the back yard!
Kelly's pond     Kelly made this 10' x 6' Koi pond as a place to sit and relax. The falls is 3-1/2' tall and the stream is over 20' long. Nicely done!
RD of Nottingham NH says: Your tub garden project was easy...now I'm thinking of a pond!
Our Pond Bench even has storage for fish food, tools or a good book to read by the pond! Only $6.25

Dan's watergarden     Dan made this Oklahoma pond. It was September when he took the picture and he hopes to get some plants in the pond before the seasons change. Very nice!
Redwood Bridges     Here's a nice bridge from Redwood Garden Bridges...visit their web site to see more!
Frog     A visit from the pond inspector...and it looks like he approves! Frogs seem to find and move into a new pond within a couple weeks and are considered by many pond owners to be the final stamp of approval!
Big Pond     Dennis R of Missouri City Tx spent 2-1/2 month building this beautiful pond system. It features a 3500 gallon lower pond with boulder bridge, and 1000 gallon filter pool/bog. His advice is to look at as many ponds as possible for ideas and to build your pond 50% bigger than what you think you will want!
Small pond     Melanie B is still working on the plantings around her pond, but it sure looks nice already! Too bad the New Hampshire summers are so short and we can't ponder all year long.
Plant & Fish Tip: Many ponderers do water garden in the winter, by setting up a small tub garden in the house and using it to over winter tender tropical plants and even fish if their pond is too shallow to winter them outdoors. Our Pond Place CD offers this and other techniques to winter both fish and plants.
